DALL·E 3 at a glance
DALL·E 3 followed detailed prompts far more closely than DALL·E 2, used ChatGPT to write and refine prompts, and was set to reach ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise in October 2023.
What changed with DALL·E 3
OpenAI unveiled DALL·E 3 as a research preview on September 20, 2023. Its main improvement was prompt adherence: OpenAI said it captured far more nuance and detail than earlier systems, so users needed less prompt engineering.
DALL·E 3 was built natively on ChatGPT, which turned a short idea into a detailed prompt and let users ask for tweaks in plain language. OpenAI said it would reach ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise in October and the API later that fall. It declined requests for public figures by name or in the style of living artists, and creators could opt their images out of future training.
Why DALL·E 3 matters for businesses
For small businesses, describing an image in conversation instead of learning prompt syntax lowered the skill barrier for social graphics and mockups. OpenAI also said the images belonged to the user to reprint, sell or merchandise, which mattered for commercial use.
