Amazon lets invited US customers text Alexa for Shopping to find, compare and buy products

Alexa for Shopping at a glance

Amazon's AI shopping agent, Alexa for Shopping, can now be reached by text message by a small, invitation-only group of US customers. It searches, compares, tracks prices and can complete purchases; Amazon says millions more customers will get access in the coming weeks.

What changed with Alexa for Shopping

On November 6, 2026, Amazon began inviting a small group of US customers to text Alexa for Shopping, its AI shopping agent, which was already available in the Amazon Shopping app and on the Amazon website. Invited customers receive a text, accept the terms, link their phone number and start messaging a contact that appears as Alexa Shopping. Amazon says texting will roll out to millions more customers in the coming weeks, and people without an invitation can sign up on a landing page to get news and offers from Amazon by text and be among the first to hear when more invites go out.

By text, the agent searches for products, compares options, makes suggestions, adds items to the cart and can complete the purchase for the customer; in Amazon's reorder example it buys with the customer's approval. Customers can send a photo to find similar products, set up a weekly grocery order, share a recipe photo to add its ingredients, track deals and price drops, and check up to a full year of price history. It also manages lists, checks on orders, flags new releases on Amazon and the wider web, and can show products from other stores through Shop Direct. Amazon says it remembers stated preferences, such as vegan-only products, and personalizes results over time.

Amazon is also rolling out continuity, so a request started by text can carry over to the Amazon Shopping app, Amazon.com and Alexa-enabled devices, and the other way round. Over time, the same text thread will also hold order updates, delivery notifications and deals. Amazon says more than 400 million customers used Alexa for Shopping in the last 12 months, and that the number of customers using its agentic features has grown more than eight times since the start of the year.

Why Alexa for Shopping matters for businesses

Shopping agents are moving into channels people already use every day, and they act for the shopper: comparing, watching prices and buying. For retailers and brands, that raises the value of complete product details, clear pricing and reviews an agent can read, and of checking whether products can be surfaced through programs such as Shop Direct. For agencies, it is another sign that customers will expect to get things done by text, a channel worth designing for with clear consent and opt-out handling.
