AWS open-sources Kiro Crew, the agent workspace used by tens of thousands of Amazon builders

Kiro Crew at a glance

Kiro Crew coordinates several agents across repos, tools and sessions, runs scheduled jobs and keeps working while you are away. Built on the Kiro harness, it was adopted by over 39,000 Amazon builders before its open-source release.

What changed with Kiro Crew

On August 4, 2026, the Kiro team at AWS released Kiro Crew as open source. It began as an internal side project called MeshClaw built on the Kiro CLI, and the team says it was adopted by more than 39,000 Amazon builders in under six months, with nearly 500 contributors. Kiro Crew coordinates work that spans repos, tools and days: triaging ticket queues, investigating incidents across repositories, or running long migrations with checkpoints and retries.

It runs agents behind the Agent Client Protocol with a live activity view of each agent's plan, tool calls and results, and it can run several conversations in parallel or delegate to subagents. Memory, lessons from corrections and reusable skills carry across sessions, and scheduled jobs, heartbeats and authenticated webhooks can start work automatically. Security features include an OS-level sandbox, commands denied by default, credential redaction and a signed audit log. It runs locally or on a machine you control, through a desktop app, web dashboard or terminal interface, and can connect to Slack, Telegram and Discord.

Why Kiro Crew matters for businesses

For agencies, Kiro Crew is a self-hosted alternative to cloud agent services for long-running engineering work, and its open code lets teams audit exactly what the agent can access. Teams should still review its permission settings before connecting it to client repositories or CI systems.
