Kiro autonomous agent at a glance
At re:Invent 2025, AWS previewed three autonomous agents: the Kiro autonomous agent for development, AWS Security Agent for design reviews and penetration tests, and AWS DevOps Agent for incident response. The security and DevOps agents were generally available by April 2026.
What changed with Kiro autonomous agent
On December 2, 2025, at re:Invent, AWS announced frontier agents, which it describes as autonomous, scalable agents that can run for hours or days toward a goal without constant supervision. All three launched in preview. The Kiro autonomous agent keeps context across sessions, learns from pull requests and feedback, can make one change across several repositories, takes tasks from a GitHub backlog and connects to tools such as Jira, GitHub and Slack. It builds on Kiro, which AWS made generally available on November 17, 2025.
AWS Security Agent reviews design documents and pull requests against an organization's own security rules and runs on-demand penetration tests that return validated findings with fix code. AWS DevOps Agent triages incidents, finds root causes across tools such as CloudWatch, Datadog, Dynatrace, New Relic and Splunk, and suggests reliability improvements; AWS says it has handled thousands of internal escalations with an estimated root-cause identification rate above 86%. In its April 6, 2026 weekly roundup, AWS said the Security and DevOps agents were generally available.
Why Kiro autonomous agent matters for businesses
For agencies, these agents target work that is hard to staff continuously, such as on-call triage and frequent security testing. They are most useful for teams already on AWS, and their autonomy makes clear permissions and human review of proposed changes essential.
