Black Forest Labs launches FLUX.1 Kontext for in-context image generation and editing

FLUX.1 Kontext [pro] at a glance

FLUX.1 Kontext models accept text plus reference images to make targeted edits while keeping characters consistent, with [pro] and [max] in the API and a 12B open-weight [dev] variant.

What changed with FLUX.1 Kontext [pro]

On May 29, 2025, Black Forest Labs introduced FLUX.1 Kontext, a suite of image models that take both text and reference images as input. FLUX.1 Kontext [pro] handles local edits, in-context changes and classic text-to-image generation in one model, while the experimental [max] improves prompt adherence and typography.

The [pro] and [max] models launched in the BFL API and through partners such as Krea, Freepik, Leonardo, fal and Replicate, along with a BFL Playground for testing. BFL said [pro] scored highest on text editing and character preservation in its KontextBench tests. A 12B open-weight [dev] variant started in private beta, with an open-weights release following in a later BFL post.
