OpenAI makes GPT-Live 1 full-duplex voice model generally available

GPT-Live 1 at a glance

GPT-Live 1 listens and speaks at the same time, hands reasoning to a backend agent, and costs $0.05 per minute of voice session.

What changed with GPT-Live 1

OpenAI made GPT-Live 1 (gpt-live-1) generally available on September 10, 2026. Its model page calls it OpenAI's premier model for natural, expressive voice conversations with smooth interruption handling. It is full-duplex, meaning it can listen and speak at once, and it can delegate reasoning and tool use to a backend agent.

Voice sessions cost $0.05 per minute, billed per second without rounding up, while backend model and tool usage is billed separately. It runs only on the Live sessions endpoint, with rate limits counted in concurrent sessions. In October OpenAI added prompt-to-voice, nine new voices and native Decisions API integration.

Why GPT-Live 1 matters for businesses

Per-minute pricing makes voice-agent costs easier to quote to clients than token-based audio billing. For receptionist, booking and support lines, the separation between a conversational voice layer and a reasoning backend also lets teams pick a cheaper or stronger model for the work behind the call.
