What changed with n8n 3.0
On October 27, 2026, n8n released the 3.0.0 beta of its workflow automation platform for self-hosted and n8n Cloud users, with stable 3.x expected in early December 2026. It is a major version with breaking changes: manual executions always run on workers in queue mode, in-memory binary data is removed, the default Code node timeout drops from 5 minutes to 1, and the Cron and Interval nodes give way to the Schedule Trigger.
Removed nodes include Function, Function Item, Item Lists, the legacy OpenAI node, and older AI Agent modes; many migrate automatically. Security defaults tighten: encryption key rotation is always on, Slack credentials need a signing secret, the SSRF block list grows, and unverified community packages are off. Chat Hub is off by default. Self-hosted n8n now runs on Docker only, so npm and npx installs are no longer supported; Kubernetes and Helm are unaffected.
A Migration Report under Settings, on version 2.39 or later, lists affected workflows, applies many fixes as new workflow versions, and assigns owners. After stable 3.x ships, 2.x gets security and critical fixes for 12 months. Version 1.x support ends December 31, 2026, with no direct path to 3.x.
