OpenAI launches GPT-4.1, mini and nano in the API with 1M-token context

GPT-4.1 at a glance

The API-only GPT-4.1 family improved coding and instruction following over GPT-4o, raised context to 1M tokens, cut prices, and started the retirement of GPT-4.5 Preview.

What changed with GPT-4.1

On April 14, 2025, OpenAI launched GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 mini and GPT-4.1 nano, available only through the API. All three support up to 1 million tokens of context, up from 128,000 for GPT-4o. OpenAI reported 54.6% on SWE-bench Verified for GPT-4.1, versus 33.2% for GPT-4o, and large gains in following formats, negative instructions and multi-turn requests.

Launch prices per million tokens were $2.00 input and $8.00 output for GPT-4.1, $0.40 and $1.60 for mini, and $0.10 and $0.40 for nano, OpenAI's cheapest and fastest model at the time, with deeper discounts for cached input and the Batch API. OpenAI also announced that GPT-4.5 Preview would be turned off in the API on July 14, 2025.

Why GPT-4.1 matters for businesses

For businesses, GPT-4.1 became a dependable workhorse for agents and automations: it follows detailed instructions literally, handles long documents, and nano made high-volume classification or routing very cheap. OpenAI advised writing explicit, specific prompts because the model takes them literally.
