OpenAI releases Sora to ChatGPT Plus and Pro users with the faster Sora Turbo

OpenAI Sora at a glance

Sora became a standalone product at sora.com, generating up to 1080p videos of up to 20 seconds from text, images or video, included in ChatGPT Plus with higher limits on Pro.

What changed with OpenAI Sora

On December 9, 2024, OpenAI released Sora as a standalone product at sora.com for ChatGPT Plus and Pro users. It ran on Sora Turbo, a new version that OpenAI said was much faster than the model previewed in February.

Users could generate videos up to 1080p and 20 seconds long in widescreen, vertical or square formats, and extend, remix or blend their own assets. A storyboard tool let them set inputs frame by frame. Plus included up to 50 videos a month at 480p, or fewer at 720p, and Pro offered ten times more usage plus higher resolution and longer clips. OpenAI said physics and long, complex actions were still weak points.

Why OpenAI Sora matters for businesses

For businesses, Sora's release made AI video a subscription feature rather than a demo. Short social clips, product B-roll and concept videos became cheap to try, though limits on clip length and realism meant it supplemented production work rather than replacing it.
