What changed with OpenAI GPT-5
On August 7, 2025, OpenAI introduced GPT-5. In ChatGPT it is a unified system: a fast model for most questions, a deeper GPT-5 thinking model for hard problems, and a router that picks between them based on the conversation. It began rolling out to Free, Plus, Pro and Team users the same day, with Pro also getting GPT-5 pro.
OpenAI reported 74.9% on SWE-bench Verified and 94.6% on AIME 2025 without tools, and said GPT-5's answers with web search were about 45% less likely to contain a factual error than GPT-4o's. In the API it came as gpt-5, gpt-5-mini and gpt-5-nano, with 272K input and 128K output tokens (400K total), a new minimal reasoning setting, a verbosity parameter and plaintext custom tools. Launch prices per million tokens were $1.25 input and $10 output for gpt-5, $0.25 and $2 for mini, and $0.05 and $0.40 for nano.
