OpenCode 1.0 ships a rebuilt interface for the provider-agnostic open-source coding agent

OpenCode at a glance

OpenCode, the MIT-licensed coding agent from the team behind the SST framework, reached 1.0 on October 31, 2025 with a new terminal interface. It works with models from many providers, including local ones, and its repository passed 220,000 GitHub stars by November 2026.

What changed with OpenCode

OpenCode is an open-source AI coding agent built by the team behind SST, a framework for deploying apps on AWS. Its first GitHub releases date to May 2025. On October 31, 2025, the project tagged version 1.0.0, a complete rewrite of the terminal interface on OpenTUI, an in-house framework written in Zig and SolidJS, replacing the earlier Go and Bubble Tea interface.

Version 1.0 compressed session history to show full detail only for edits and shell commands, added a command bar opened with Ctrl+P, and added a session sidebar. The interface talks to the same local OpenCode server as before, so existing setups kept working, and users could downgrade to the 0.x line if needed.

OpenCode's appeal is that it is not tied to one model company. Its site says it connects to more than 75 providers through Models.dev, including local models, can sign in with existing GitHub Copilot or ChatGPT plans, and runs in the terminal, a desktop app or an IDE extension. The code is MIT licensed, and the repository now lives under the anomalyco organization on GitHub.

Why OpenCode matters for businesses

For teams, a provider-agnostic agent makes it easier to switch models as prices and quality change, or to keep some work on local models. The trade-off is that you manage keys and spending yourself: store provider keys locally where possible, set billing alerts with each provider, and rotate keys if a hosted service that holds them reports a breach.

  1. Update (Updated)

OpenCode disclosed that attackers broke into a legacy system behind its hosted Console and exposed provider API keys stored by 1.4% of Console users, some of whom saw unauthorized charges. The open-source CLI and locally stored keys were not affected. Affected users should revoke keys at each provider.

  2. Availability

Anthropic tightened safeguards that blocked third-party tools from using Claude Pro and Max subscriptions through OAuth, cutting off that route in OpenCode. OpenCode responded with an OpenCode Black tier and said it would work with OpenAI so users can bring Codex subscriptions.
