What changed with gpt-3.5-turbo
On March 1, 2023, OpenAI made the ChatGPT model family available in its API as gpt-3.5-turbo, priced at $0.002 per 1K tokens. OpenAI said system-wide optimizations had cut ChatGPT's cost by 90% since December 2022 and that it was passing those savings to developers. The same day, it put its open-source Whisper large-v2 speech recognition model behind a hosted endpoint, whisper-1, at $0.006 per minute of audio. OpenAI’s original post is dated March 1, 2023; that page now shows “Updated: April 24, 2024” because OpenAI later renamed the ChatGPT API to the GPT-3.5 Turbo API.
Launch partners included Snap (My AI for Snapchat+), Quizlet, Instacart, Shopify's Shop app and the language app Speak. OpenAI also introduced a chat-style message format, dedicated capacity for large customers and revised API terms: data sent through the API would no longer be used for training unless the organization opted in.
