What changed with GPT-5.6 Sol

OpenAI released the GPT-5.6 model family on July 9, 2026: gpt-5.6-sol for frontier capability, gpt-5.6-terra as a balanced option and gpt-5.6-luna for high-volume work. The gpt-5.6 alias routes to Sol. The release added Programmatic Tool Calling, explicit prompt caching controls and multi-agent orchestration in beta.

Prices fell soon after launch. On July 30 OpenAI cut Luna by 80% and Terra by 20%, and on August 21 Sol dropped to $4 input and $20 output per million tokens; the Sol model page labels that price as promotional through November 30, 2026.
