OpenAI launches ChatGPT Work, an agent that turns goals into finished documents, slides and apps

What changed with ChatGPT Work

On July 9, 2026, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Work, an agent mode in ChatGPT that gathers information across connected apps and files and turns a goal into finished materials such as spreadsheets, slide decks, documents and web apps. It breaks long projects into steps and can stay with a task for hours, while you follow progress, answer questions and approve important actions. It launched alongside GPT-5.6, which powers it.

Scheduled Tasks let Work keep projects moving while you are away, for example turning new Slack or Microsoft Teams messages into updated docs. A new ChatGPT desktop app for Mac and Windows bundles Chat, Work and Codex, can use local files and apps, and includes a built-in browser; it replaces the Codex app, and the earlier desktop app was renamed ChatGPT Classic. Enterprise and Edu admins get access controls, the Compliance API and spend controls, and auto-review checks sensitive actions before they run.

Work rolled out first on web and mobile to Pro, Enterprise and Edu users, with Plus and Business following over the next few days. The desktop app with Chat, Work and Codex is available on every plan, including Free. Usage follows the Codex model, so heavier tasks consume more of a plan's included usage.

Why ChatGPT Work matters for businesses

For agencies, this puts a general-purpose work agent in front of every ChatGPT customer. Client teams will expect reports, decks and simple internal tools from a single request, so agency value shifts toward connecting the right data, defining approval steps and building the repeatable workflows Work cannot infer on its own.
