OpenAI adds workspace agents to ChatGPT, shared Codex-powered agents for teams

Workspace agents at a glance

Workspace agents, described as an evolution of GPTs, run in the cloud on Codex, follow team workflows across connected tools and Slack, run on schedules and ask for approval on sensitive steps. They launched in research preview for Business, Enterprise, Edu and Teachers plans.

What changed with Workspace agents

On April 22, 2026, OpenAI introduced workspace agents in ChatGPT, shared agents that teams build once and use together. OpenAI calls them an evolution of GPTs: they run on Codex in the cloud with a workspace for files, code, tools and memory, so they can write and run code, use connected apps and continue multi-step work while you are away.

You create one from the Agents tab by describing a workflow or dropping in a file, and ChatGPT helps define the steps, tools and skills. Agents can run on a schedule or sit in Slack channels to pick up requests. Builders choose which tools and actions an agent may use and can require approval before steps such as sending an email or editing a spreadsheet; admins control access by group, and the Compliance API logs agent configurations and runs.

At launch, workspace agents were in research preview for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu and Teachers plans, free until May 6, 2026, with credit-based pricing from that date. GPTs remained available, and OpenAI said conversion from GPTs would come later. The OpenAI page now notes that workspace agents are generally available in Business, Enterprise and Edu.

Why Workspace agents matters for businesses

For agencies, this turns the classic custom GPT into something closer to a deployed workflow: scheduled, connected to business tools and governed by approvals. Templates for lead outreach, reporting and vendor screening overlap with common agency deliverables, so the differentiator becomes process design and integration work rather than the agent shell.
