What changed with Midjourney V5
Midjourney released its V5 model on March 15, 2023. Midjourney's documentation at the time described it as its newest and most advanced model, available by adding the --v 5 parameter to a prompt or picking it in the /settings menu, while V4 remained the default for a while. Midjourney’s current Version page no longer lists V5, so the release date comes from an archived copy of its documentation from March 2023.
Midjourney followed it with V5.2 in June 2023. At the time the models were used mainly through Midjourney's Discord bot, where users switched versions with parameters and settings.
Why Midjourney V5 matters for businesses
For marketing teams and small agencies, V5 was when AI imagery became good enough for mood boards, social posts and concept art without obvious artifacts. It also raised early questions about rights and disclosure that brands still have to handle.
