What changed with Gemini 2.5 Pro
On June 17, 2025, Google released stable, generally available versions of Gemini 2.5 Pro and Gemini 2.5 Flash so developers could build production applications on them. Google described the 2.5 family as hybrid reasoning models balancing performance with cost and speed.
It also opened a preview of Gemini 2.5 Flash-Lite, its most cost-efficient and fastest 2.5 model, which Google said beats 2.0 Flash-Lite on coding, math, science, reasoning and multimodal tests while lowering latency. Flash-Lite keeps the family's features: adjustable thinking budgets, Google Search and code execution tools, multimodal input and a 1 million token context window. Previews were in Google AI Studio and Vertex AI.

On November 2, 2026, Google deprecated gemini-2.5-pro and gemini-2.5-flash. From December 1, 2026, API requests route to gemini-3.8-flash and gemini-3.5-flash-lite at those models' rates. Gemini 2.5 Flash-Lite is not deprecated.
