GitHub Copilot CLI reaches general availability for all Copilot subscribers

GitHub Copilot CLI at a glance

GitHub's terminal coding agent is now generally available on Copilot Pro, Pro+, Business, and Enterprise, with plan and autopilot modes, MCP support, and background delegation to the cloud agent.

What changed with GitHub Copilot CLI

GitHub Copilot CLI is a coding agent that runs in the terminal: it can plan a task, edit files, run tests, and keep going until the work is done. At general availability it offers a plan mode for reviewing an approach before coding and an autopilot mode that runs without step-by-step approvals.

It includes a built-in GitHub MCP server and supports custom MCP servers, plugins, agent skills, custom agents, and hooks. Prefixing a prompt with & hands the work to the cloud coding agent. Business and Enterprise admins must enable it in policy settings first.

Why GitHub Copilot CLI matters for businesses

The changelog lists models from several providers, including Claude Opus 4.6, Claude Sonnet 4.6, GPT-5.3-Codex, and Gemini 3 Pro. For small teams, it means agent-style coding is part of an existing Copilot subscription rather than a separate tool.
