Microsoft Scout at a glance
Microsoft introduced Autopilots, agents that act on their own under their own identity, starting with Scout, built on OpenClaw. Foundry Agent Service also got sandboxed hosted agents that accept agents from any major framework.
What changed with Microsoft Scout
On June 2, 2026, at Build, Microsoft introduced Autopilots, a category of always-on agents that work in the background under their own identity and within the permissions an organization sets. The first is Microsoft Scout, which connects to Teams, Outlook, OneDrive and SharePoint, reaches the browser, local resources and MCP servers through a desktop app, and can coordinate meetings across time zones, block calendar time for upcoming deliverables and flag stalled decisions. It is built on the open-source OpenClaw project and draws context from Work IQ.
Scout launched as an experimental release for Frontier customers and in private preview; access requires Frontier enrollment, an Intune policy and an opt-in attestation. Each agent gets its own Entra identity, and Purview labels and data loss prevention apply before anything is sent. In Microsoft Foundry, hosted agents in Foundry Agent Service, due for general availability within 30 days, run each session in its own sandbox and accept agents built with Microsoft Agent Framework, GitHub Copilot SDK, LangGraph and other SDKs.
Why Microsoft Scout matters for businesses
Microsoft is moving from chat assistants to agents that act on their own with governed identities. For agencies, framework-agnostic hosting means an agent built with LangGraph or another SDK can be deployed for a Microsoft client and published into Teams and Microsoft 365 Copilot without a rewrite.
