What changed with Copilot Cowork
On June 16, 2026, Microsoft made Copilot Cowork generally available to Microsoft 365 Copilot customers worldwide. Cowork, announced in March as a research preview built with Anthropic, runs long, multi-step tasks across tools in the cloud and returns finished work. Microsoft said more than half of the Fortune 500 used it during the three-month Frontier preview. At launch it runs on Anthropic models including Opus 4.8 and Sonnet 4.6, with GPT 5.5 available in Frontier and a lower-cost Microsoft model, Cowork 1, announced as coming.
Cowork requires the Microsoft 365 Copilot user license and is billed per task in Copilot Credits, based on model use, context retrieval, tool calls and runtime. Pay-as-you-go costs $0.01 per credit, and a P3 option discounts committed volume. It is off by default, and admins can set spending limits at the tenant, group and user level. Nine partner plugins, including Harvey, LSEG, Miro and monday.com, were available at launch.

Why Copilot Cowork matters for businesses
Agentic work in Microsoft 365 now carries a variable, metered cost on top of seat licenses. Agencies helping clients roll out Cowork should set budgets and usage alerts before turning it on, and estimate costs from expected task volume.
