From December 1, 2026, Gemini API requests to gemini-2.5-pro go to Gemini 3.8 Flash and gemini-2.5-flash to Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite, billed at the new models' rates. Apps that pin these IDs should test the migration now.

What changed with Gemini 2.5 Pro
On November 2, 2026, Google's Gemini API changelog deprecated gemini-2.5-pro and gemini-2.5-flash, both released on June 17, 2025. Neither can be selected in Google AI Studio any more, and API access is limited to existing users. Gemini 2.5 Flash-Lite is not deprecated.
Effective December 1, 2026, requests to gemini-2.5-pro route automatically to gemini-3.8-flash, and requests to gemini-2.5-flash route to gemini-3.5-flash-lite, billed at those models' rates. Google's deprecations page calls December 1 the earliest possible retirement date.
Prices move in both directions. Gemini 2.5 Pro costs $1.25 input and $10 output per million tokens for prompts up to 200K tokens. Gemini 3.8 Flash costs $0.75 and $3.75 through December 31, 2026, then $1.50 and $7.50 from January 1, 2027. Gemini 2.5 Flash and Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite both list $0.30 input for text and $2.50 output, and Flash-Lite charges the same $0.30 for audio input instead of $1.00.

Why Gemini 2.5 Pro matters for businesses
Google flags migration work: stricter function calling and thought_signature checks, thinking_level replacing thinking_budget, removed sampling parameters, and no prefilled model turns. Agencies with client automations pinned to 2.5 models should switch deliberately before December 1, rerun their tests, and check tool calls and output formats rather than letting the silent reroute decide.
