New paid Gemini API projects now store GenerateContent requests by default

Gemini API at a glance

Paid-tier projects created on or after October 26, 2026 log GenerateContent requests by default, matching the Interactions API. Logs keep 55 days unless changed. Opt out per request with store=false or in the Logs settings.

What changed with Gemini API

On October 26, 2026, Google changed a default in the Gemini API. On the paid tier, new projects that call generateContent, streamGenerateContent or batchGenerateContent now store requests by default (store=true), matching the Interactions API. Existing projects keep their current settings.

Stored requests appear on the project's Logs page in Google AI Studio. Google's docs say logs expire after 55 days by default and can be set to 7, 14, 28 or 55 days, while logs saved to a dataset do not expire. To opt out, set store=false on a request or turn off GenerateContent logging in the Logs and Datasets settings. How Google uses logged data is covered by its Data Logging and Sharing policy.

Why Gemini API matters for businesses

For agencies handling client data, this is a privacy and compliance setting to check, not a feature to ignore. When you create a new Gemini project for a client, decide on purpose whether prompts and responses should be kept, set the retention window, and record that choice in the client's data processing notes.
