Google Cloud introduces the Gemini agent, a single agent for work across apps and models

Gemini agent at a glance

At Gemini at Work 2026, Google Cloud announced a universal Gemini agent that plans work, uses tools and skills, creates sub-agents and coworker agents, and routes jobs across Gemini and Claude models with per-project spend caps.

What changed with Gemini agent

On October 8, 2026, at Gemini at Work 2026, Google Cloud announced the Gemini agent: one agent that answers questions, does knowledge work, creates images and media, and writes and runs code from a single prompt box and a single API. It runs in the cloud with persistent memory, can be reached from the web, mobile and desktop apps, the command line, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 and Slack, and can also run headless inside other applications.

It can spin up temporary sub-agents for multi-step jobs, or act as a coworker agent with its own identity, Workspace account and email address. It connects to systems such as Salesforce, ServiceNow, Jira, BigQuery and Snowflake and to any MCP server, with shared registries for tools and skills. Google says it routes each job across Gemini and Anthropic's Claude models, and admins can set hard per-project spend caps that pause the agent. Versions for financial services and legal teams are in preview.

Why Gemini agent matters for businesses

Google is packaging agents as named teammates with their own accounts, permissions and budgets. For agencies, client deployments will increasingly mean writing skills, connecting tools and setting governance rather than building agents from scratch.
