Conversation Memory at a glance
Retell AI agents can now keep a short running brief per contact and use it in later phone calls and SMS chats, priced at $0.005 per save or backfill run.
What changed with Conversation Memory
Retell AI's October 8, 2026 changelog introduced Conversation Memory, which lets agents remember a caller across conversations without the builder writing their own storage and retrieval logic. Retell keeps a short brief for each contact covering preferences, earlier topics, and open follow-ups, and removes items once they are resolved.
Briefs update after each completed phone call and SMS chat and are matched by phone number; web calls and web chats do not update them. Saving and recall are separate toggles per agent, flow nodes can skip questions the brief already answers, and teams can view, edit, or clear briefs in Contacts or backfill them from earlier eligible calls.

Why Conversation Memory matters for businesses
Memory follows the workspace's existing storage and PII redaction settings, and Retell lists the cost at $0.005 per run. For service businesses, a returning customer no longer has to repeat their details, but teams should review what is stored, since the changelog does not state a specific retention period.
