Claude Sonnet 5 at a glance
Sonnet 5 narrows the gap with Opus 4.8 on reasoning, tool use, coding and knowledge work at a lower price, became the default model for Free and Pro users, and its $2/$10 introductory price was later made permanent.
What changed with Claude Sonnet 5
On June 30, 2026, Anthropic released Claude Sonnet 5, which it calls its most agentic Sonnet model. It can plan, use tools such as browsers and terminals, and run autonomously at a level that previously required larger models. Anthropic reports clear gains over Sonnet 4.6 in reasoning, tool use, coding and knowledge work, with performance close to Opus 4.8, and at higher effort settings it can match Opus 4.8 on some tasks.
Sonnet 5 became the default model for Free and Pro plans and is available to Max, Team and Enterprise users and through the API as claude-sonnet-5. It launched at an introductory $2 input and $10 output per million tokens; on August 10, 2026, Anthropic made that the standard price instead of raising it to $3/$15. Anthropic's safety testing found fewer undesirable behaviors than Sonnet 4.6 and much lower cybersecurity capability than its Opus models.

Why Claude Sonnet 5 matters for businesses
