Anthropic donates the Agent Skills standard to the Agentic AI Foundation

Agent Skills at a glance

Anthropic handed the Agent Skills format, which packages task know-how for AI agents in SKILL.md folders, to the Linux Foundation's Agentic AI Foundation for neutral governance.

What changed with Agent Skills

A skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file, and optionally scripts or reference files, that teaches an agent a specific task. Anthropic published the standard in December 2025 and has now donated it, along with its name, GitHub organization and agentskills.io domain, to the Agentic AI Foundation, which already hosts the Model Context Protocol.

Anthropic says more than 70 agent platforms have adopted the format, including ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot and VS Code. It reports about 1 million published skills and nearly 280 million installs. Engineers from Anthropic, Google, OpenAI and other companies will maintain it as individuals, with versioned releases and security guidance on the roadmap.

Why Agent Skills matters for businesses

For agencies, a vendor-neutral skill format means reusable client playbooks can move between agent tools instead of being rebuilt for each platform.
