OpenAI releases the Codex app, a desktop command center for running coding agents in parallel

Codex app at a glance

The Codex app for macOS manages several agents at once in project threads with worktrees, adds a skills library and scheduled Automations, and uses system-level sandboxing. A Windows version followed on March 4, 2026.

What changed with Codex app

On February 2, 2026, OpenAI released the Codex app for macOS, a desktop interface for directing several coding agents at once. Agents run in separate threads grouped by project, and built-in worktree support lets multiple agents work on the same repository without conflicts. The app picks up history and settings from the Codex CLI and IDE extension. OpenAI added a Windows version on March 4, 2026.

Skills bundle instructions, resources and scripts so Codex can handle tasks beyond code, with a library that covers tools such as Figma, Linear, Vercel, Netlify and document formats. Automations run instructions and skills on a schedule and drop results into a review queue. By default, agents are sandboxed to their folder or branch and ask before running commands that need elevated permissions, such as network access.

The app is included with ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu, with extra credits available. For a limited time, OpenAI also opened Codex to Free and Go users and doubled rate limits on paid plans. In July 2026, the Codex app became part of the new ChatGPT desktop app.

Why Codex app matters for businesses

For agencies that ship client websites and automations, the app makes parallel agent work practical on an ordinary laptop: one agent fixes bugs while another drafts a feature. Scheduled Automations and shared skills also give small teams a way to standardize recurring maintenance work.
