OpenAI Codex at a glance
OpenAI plans to buy Pierre Computer Company, whose Trees and Diffs libraries already power file browsing and code review in the Codex app, to build Git workflows for coding agents. Pierre's open-source projects stay open, and Code Storage keeps running after the deal closes.
What changed with OpenAI Codex
On November 4, 2026, OpenAI announced an agreement to acquire Pierre Computer Company, Inc., the team behind Code Storage, a service that lets apps store code and track its history with Git, and a set of open-source developer tools. Pierre's Trees and Diffs libraries already power file navigation and change review in the Codex app, and the team recently released Highlights, a fast syntax highlighter that updates as code streams in. Terms were not disclosed.
OpenAI says it wants to adapt Git workflows to teams that run many coding agents in parallel, building on Pando, the in-house source control backend it described two days earlier in Scaling Git at OpenAI. Pierre's open-source projects will stay open source, and Code Storage customers can keep using it after closing while its features move into Codex. The deal still needs customary closing conditions, including regulatory approval, and the companies remain independent until then.
Why OpenAI Codex matters for businesses
For teams using Codex, expect review, branching and code history to become a bigger part of the product. If you use Code Storage or Pierre's libraries in your own tools, nothing changes yet, but watch for migration notes once the deal closes.
