Google launches Gemini 3.5 Flash at I/O 2026, the first Gemini 3.5 model

Gemini 3.5 Flash at a glance

Gemini 3.5 Flash opened the Gemini 3.5 series at I/O 2026. Google says it beats Gemini 3.1 Pro on hard coding and agent benchmarks, and it became the default model in the Gemini app and AI Mode in Search.

What changed with Gemini 3.5 Flash

On May 19, 2026, at Google I/O, Google introduced the Gemini 3.5 family and released 3.5 Flash first. It reached the Gemini app and AI Mode in Search, where it became the default model, plus Google Antigravity, the Gemini API in Google AI Studio and Android Studio, Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform and Gemini Enterprise. Google said 3.5 Pro would follow the next month; in a July 21 update it said 3.5 Pro was still being tested with partners.

Google reported that 3.5 Flash outperforms Gemini 3.1 Pro on Terminal-Bench 2.1 (76.2%), GDPval-AA (1656 Elo) and MCP Atlas (83.6%), scores 84.2% on CharXiv Reasoning, and generates output about four times faster than other frontier models. Shopify, Salesforce, Ramp, Xero and Databricks were among the early users it named. These are Google's own figures.

Why Gemini 3.5 Flash matters for businesses

Google is pitching 3.5 Flash at long-running, multi-step agent work at Flash-class speed, which suits back-office automation such as invoice reading, onboarding document review and workflows that run for days. Agencies already building on Google can test it directly in Antigravity or the Gemini API.
