xAI launches Grok Build, a terminal coding agent, in early beta

Grok Build at a glance

Grok Build runs in the terminal with a plan-review-approve flow, clean diffs, and support for AGENTS.md, plugins, hooks, skills, and MCP servers; the early beta opened to SuperGrok and X Premium Plus subscribers.

What changed with Grok Build

On May 25, 2026, xAI released an early beta of Grok Build, a coding agent that runs from the terminal and installs with a single command. It was available to all SuperGrok and X Premium Plus subscribers, who sign in with their existing account.

For larger tasks, Grok Build can start in plan mode, where you approve the plan, comment on individual steps, or rewrite it before any code changes; approved changes then appear as diffs. xAI says it picks up a repository's AGENTS.md, plugins, hooks, skills, and MCP servers without extra setup. xAI's developer release notes for May also list headless use in scripts, the Agent Client Protocol for building on top of it, and an early-access coding model, grok-build-0.1.

Why Grok Build matters for businesses

For agencies that already use terminal agents, Grok Build is another option that reads the same AGENTS.md conventions, which keeps switching costs low. Compare it on your own repositories and keep human review of diffs, especially on client code.
