Google Cloud spend caps at a glance
Google Cloud Budgets can now halt pay-as-you-go spending on a project or service once a cap is hit, without deleting resources. Caps on AI services use live cost estimates, reset monthly, and can be managed through an API.
What changed with Google Cloud spend caps
On October 30, 2026, Google Cloud made spend caps in Cloud Budgets generally available. A cap stops pay-as-you-go and committed-use requests on a project or service once its budget is exceeded, protecting against runaway costs without deleting resources. Provisioned Throughput is never halted, so reserved capacity keeps serving traffic.
Since the preview, Google added a spend caps API in the Cloud Billing Budgets API to lift, update or delete caps and to apply caps automatically to new sandbox projects. Caps on AI services trigger within minutes based on estimated live costs, while standard billing data can take hours to settle. Enforced caps reset at the start of the next month unless a team chooses a manual override, and alerts go out at 50%, 80% and 100% by default.
Why Google Cloud spend caps matters for businesses
Google recommends starting with strict, low-dollar caps on non-production environments such as developer sandboxes and experimental AI agent playgrounds. Agencies running Gemini or Vertex AI work in client projects should do exactly that: a looping agent or a leaked key can burn through a budget overnight, and a cap that stops spending within minutes is cheaper than an apology. Check the documentation for which services are eligible.
