Claude Cowork at a glance
Cowork lets Claude work through multi-step tasks inside a folder you choose, using connectors and skills. It began as a macOS research preview for Max subscribers and became generally available on all paid plans in April 2026.
What changed with Claude Cowork
On January 12, 2026, Anthropic introduced Cowork as a research preview in the Claude macOS app for Max subscribers. It is built on the same foundations as Claude Code but aimed at non-coding work: you give Claude access to a chosen folder, and it plans and carries out tasks such as sorting files, building a spreadsheet from screenshots, or drafting a report from scattered notes. It can use existing connectors, a starter set of document skills, and Claude in Chrome for browser tasks, and it asks before significant actions.
Anthropic kept expanding it during 2026. Plugins arrived on January 30, general availability on all paid plans came on April 9 with enterprise controls such as role-based access, group spend limits and OpenTelemetry observability, and web and mobile access followed on July 7. On September 16, Anthropic began merging Cowork and chat into a single Claude experience on Pro, Max and Ultra plans.
Why Claude Cowork matters for businesses
For agencies, Cowork is the first mainstream Claude product that hands whole office tasks, not single answers, to an agent that works on local files. That makes it worth piloting for reporting, document preparation and research work, with clear rules about which folders and connectors it may touch.
