AWS lets AI agents run Step Functions workflows as MCP tools through Bedrock AgentCore Gateway

AWS Step Functions at a glance

Existing Standard and Express workflows can be exposed to agents over MCP: the agent decides when to run one and what to pass in, while Step Functions runs every step exactly as defined. Amazon Connect flows can now call the same tools.

What changed with AWS Step Functions

On October 29, 2026, AWS made Step Functions workflows available as AI agent tools through Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Gateway, which connects agents to tools over the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Existing Standard and Express workflows can be added as connector targets, and agents can also look up workflow runs, for example to report which overnight jobs failed and at which step. It is available in all Regions where AgentCore Gateway runs, at standard Step Functions and Gateway rates.

AWS's example is a refund: a support agent decides to start the refund workflow, and the eligibility check, manager approval, and credit still run in the defined order every time, because the model never controls the sequence. On November 2, AWS also added an External Tool block to Amazon Connect Customer flows, so contact-center flows can call the same AgentCore Gateway tools without custom Lambda functions.

Why AWS Step Functions matters for businesses

For agencies, this is a clean pattern for putting AI in front of money, refunds, or record changes: let the model choose the action and fill in inputs, and keep approvals and business rules in a deterministic workflow. The same idea applies outside AWS, where n8n or Make workflows can sit behind an MCP tool with the approval steps built in.
