Version 20261106.94

Dawnamite 2.2 fixes a memory leak with external plug-ins, cuts engine work during playback, and fixes timing, MIDI, editing and project issues.

Public release

Version 2.2: plug-in memory leak fixed, less engine work during playback, and timing, MIDI and editing fixes

Fixed

  • The Mac app no longer keeps the audio it receives from an external AU, VST3 or CLAP plug-in. In 2.1, each loaded plug-in added about the sample rate × 8 bytes every second, even when idle: about 1.3 GB per hour at 44.1 kHz by our estimate from the code. One user saw 19.6 GB with a single instrument. In a test of 100,000 plug-in replies, memory grew 106 MB before and 0 MB now. Guide →
  • A zero, negative, infinite or extremely large tempo, for example from a damaged project, no longer freezes the audio engine. Valid tempo curves play exactly as before. A broken time signature, such as a top number of 0, no longer silences playback. The metronome, bar timing, grids and plug-in tempo sync use a safe value; the project keeps what it saved. Quantize, snapping and step input follow time-signature changes. Guide →
  • Connecting another MIDI device no longer re-arms the selected track, which cut held notes and stopped Capture MIDI. Very short key taps sound. Panic releases held keys on every track. Turning off or removing an Arpeggio, Chord or Step Sequencer no longer leaves a note stuck. Guide →
  • Notes already sounding at the start point play for their remaining length on Play, jump, resume and loop. Chance and ratchet notes are not resumed this way. MIDI Learn mappings behave correctly after deletion and Undo. Guide →
  • Range edits and Insert Bars give each new piece its own notes or automation, so editing one piece no longer changes another. A moved comp region takes its take folder with it. Step input records keys pressed together as one chord and keeps notes inside the clip. Guide →
  • Autosave keeps saving the arrangement, MIDI and automation during audio takes, mixed takes and automation passes. Out-of-range values in a damaged project, preset or paste, such as a +200 dB fader, are repaired when loaded. A failed automation-view change or return-track rename no longer leaves an unfinished edit. Guide →
  • DAWproject exchange keeps note-clip offsets, Dawnamite device settings and samples, and note clips for every instrument. Older projects with an instrument track that has no instrument now open. Guide →
  • Newly added devices get these fixes; devices already in a saved project keep their earlier sound. Limiter: with Lookahead off and its classic settings, output stays at or below 0 dBFS. The earlier version could overshoot by up to about 23 dB. Bus Compressor, Guitar Amp and Guitar Pedal: a partial Mix no longer causes a comb-filter sound. Guide →
  • Newly added devices also get these fixes: Stutter stops capturing when playback stops. Spectral Freeze waits for sound instead of freezing silence. Tape Echo's reverb tail decays while the reverb is off. Step Sequencer follows the song's time signature. Arpeggio notes no longer end a held key or clip note. Guide →
  • In all projects, sidechain keys inside racks, instrument racks and stack cells, or taken from an effect output, now line up with the main signal. When a key arrives later than the main signal, the main signal waits for it. Guide →

Changed

  • In a test, reading a 4 MB saved plug-in state took 7.7 s before and now takes about 0.05 s. A project opens at most three external plug-ins at a time. A VST3 or CLAP plug-in saved at another path opens from where this Mac's plug-in scan found it. Guide →
  • Project bundles are written without compression and read one file at a time. They can reach 1.5 GiB, and export checks the size before writing. Older bundles still open. Guide →
  • Knob, fader and on/off changes no longer make the engine rebuild its routing or request memory while rendering. In a 13-track test project, the median extra engine time per changed block fell from about 0.055 ms to about 0.005 ms. The render thread starts as soon as the audio device has room, instead of checking every 0.1 ms, and steady playback requests no memory there. Guide →
  • Tempo-curve edits no longer make the engine step through the song from the beginning. Chamber Reverb and Simple Reverb clear near-silent tail values; audible output is unchanged. If the render thread stops responding, Stop and Quit give up after about 2 seconds instead of waiting forever. These changes reduce work inside the engine; they do not change how latency is calculated or displayed. Guide →
  • Custom shortcuts are stored as changes, so later factory updates still reach you. Guide →

Current limits

  • Latency figures remain estimates. A new project's master Limiter adds about 5.5 ms at 48 kHz to live playing (estimated from the code; direct monitoring skips it). Play, knob changes and live notes can still wait while samples or SoundFonts load. Guide →
  • In the Mac app, CPU Load still shows 0% and Memory N/A. The engine's fixed 128 MiB audio allocation remains. Guide →
  • Export no longer stops for a missing plug-in: missing effects pass audio unprocessed and missing instruments are silent, without a notice yet. Guide →
  • Plug-ins still have a 30-second limit to open. A plug-in that stops responding leaves its slot silent for about 2 seconds, and a crash during playback can shift the mix timing. Guide →
  • Undoing range edits on clips with thousands of notes or automation points can take longer than before. Bundles near 1.5 GiB have not been tested in the app. Guide →
  • The editor can still stall on some broken tempo values from a damaged project. Guide →
