Bit Crusher
Degrates the audio signal
What it does
Degrates the audio signal
Add it to a track
Select the destination track, open Plugins, and choose Add Effect. Find this device in Library → Devices → Audio Effects. Effects process the signal from the devices before them in the chain.
Controls
| Control | What to listen or look for |
|---|---|
| Crush | Reduces the sample rate for stepped, aliased digital distortion. |
| Bits | Sets the quantization bit depth; fewer bits create larger amplitude steps. |
| Boost | Adds level before quantization so more of its range is used. |
| Mix | Blends the original signal with the processed signal; 100% gives only the processed sound. |
| Jitter | Varies sample timing to make the digital texture less regular. |
| Sampling | Chooses how the reduced-rate samples are reconstructed. |
| Bits Fine | Fine-tunes the amount of amplitude quantization between whole bit depths. |
| Shape | Chooses how values are rounded into quantization steps. |
| DC Shift | Offsets the waveform before shaping, changing its symmetry and harmonic character. |
| Pre Filter | Filters the signal before sample-rate and bit-depth reduction. |
| Post Filter | Filters the crushed output to soften its high-frequency artifacts. |
| Post Oct | Offsets the post-filter cutoff in octaves. |
| Full Rate | Bypasses sample-rate reduction while retaining the other crusher processing. |
Work with this device
Start with a short passage that represents your material. Change one control at a time. Compare at a similar listening level, using the device's power control to bypass it. Save a version of the project before making a large change.
