Tape Echo
Analog-style stereo delay with tape saturation, wobble, ducking and a small plate
What it does
Analog-style stereo delay with tape saturation, wobble, ducking and a small plate
Add it to a track
Select the destination track, open Plugins, and choose Add Effect. Find this device in Library → Devices → Audio Effects. Effects process the signal from the devices before them in the chain.
Controls
| Control | What to listen or look for |
|---|---|
| Time L | Sets the delay time for the left channel. |
| Time R | Sets the delay time for the right channel. |
| Link | Links the left and right channel settings so they move together. |
| Sync | Locks timing to the project tempo instead of a free-running time or rate. |
| Sync L | Chooses a musical note division for tempo-synchronized timing. |
| Sync R | Chooses a musical note division for tempo-synchronized timing. |
| Mode | Chooses the stereo routing of the echo repeats. |
| Feedback | Feeds some processed sound back into the effect, increasing repeats or resonance. |
| Input | Sets the level entering the effect; higher input can drive level-sensitive processing harder. |
| HP | Sets the high-pass cutoff, removing low frequencies from the processed signal. |
| LP | Sets the low-pass cutoff, removing high frequencies from the processed signal. |
| Res | Sets the filter's resonance or bandwidth; higher values make a narrower, stronger emphasis. |
| Wave | Chooses the waveform of the repeating modulation. |
| Rate | Sets how fast the modulation cycle repeats. |
| Mod Sync | Locks the modulation speed to the project tempo. |
| Mod Note | Chooses a musical note division for tempo-synchronized timing. |
| Depth | Sets how far the modulation moves its target. |
| ×4 | Multiplies the modulation speed by four. |
| Filter Mod | Sets how strongly modulation moves the echo filters. |
| Wobble | Adds tape-like pitch instability to the repeats. |
| Noise | Adds tape-style noise to the echo. |
| Morph | Changes the character of the generated noise. |
| Drive | Pushes the signal into nonlinear processing, adding distortion and harmonics. |
| Duck | Reduces the echo while the input is loud so the original stays clear. |
| Gate | Gates the echo according to the input level. |
| Gate Th | Sets the input level at which the echo gate opens. |
| Gate Rel | Sets how quickly the echo gate closes after the input falls. |
| Plate | Sets the amount of plate-style reverb mixed into the echo. |
| Plate Dec | Sets how long the plate reverb tail lasts. |
| Plate Loc | Places the plate reverb before or after the echo. |
| Width | Adjusts the difference between the left and right channels to change stereo width. |
| Repitch | Chooses whether changing delay time also bends the pitch of the repeats. |
| Output | Sets the signal level leaving this stage. |
| Mix | Blends the original signal with the processed signal; 100% gives only the processed sound. |
Work with this device
Start with a short passage that represents your material. Change one control at a time. Compare at a similar listening level, using the device's power control to bypass it. Save a version of the project before making a large change.
