Audio effects

Vocoder

Classic analysis/synthesis vocoder with independent carrier and modulator ranges.

What it does

Classic analysis/synthesis vocoder with independent carrier and modulator ranges.

Add it to a track

Select the destination track, open Plugins, and choose Add Effect. Find this device in Library → Devices → Audio Effects. Effects process the signal from the devices before them in the chain.

Controls

ControlWhat to listen or look for
Carrier MinSets the lowest band of the carrier filter bank; the carrier is the main input being reshaped.
Carrier MaxSets the highest band of the carrier filter bank.
Mod MinSets the lowest frequency analysed from the modulator, whose envelope shapes the carrier.
Mod MaxSets the highest frequency analysed from the modulator.
Q StartSets the sharpness of the low-frequency filters; higher Q makes narrower, more resonant bands.
Q EndSets the sharpness of the high-frequency filters; higher Q makes narrower, more resonant bands.
AttackSets how quickly each band follows a rising modulator level.
ReleaseSets how quickly each band fades after its modulator level falls.
GainSets the signal level leaving this stage.
MixBlends the original signal with the processed signal; 100% gives only the processed sound.
TiltTilts the band levels toward low or high frequencies to darken or brighten the vocoded sound.
FreezeHolds the current modulator band envelopes while the carrier continues playing.
AirAdds high-frequency modulator content to preserve breath and consonant detail.
FormantShifts the modulator analysis frequencies relative to the carrier bands, changing the vocal-like character.
EnvelopeChooses the band-envelope response: Classic follows changes directly, while Smooth softens their movement.

Work with this device

Start with a short passage that represents your material. Change one control at a time. Compare at a similar listening level, using the device's power control to bypass it. Save a version of the project before making a large change.
